Cat Stories

Hi folks,

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about my two cats.

Rachael, the little one, our “princess”, now shares her cat bed (complete with soft pink baby blanket that Mama gave her) with Micah, our rather big male tabby.  I have her bed right next to a giant red heart pillow on the large table next to the entertainment center in the family room.  It’s really cute to see them napping right next to each other.  Rachael actually likes the heart pillow, now that she wants to share her bed with Micah.  However, I would like to see the cats try being in their bed at the same time!  Dave figures they probably already know it would be a tight fit for the two cats at once…

Rachael has been known to ask her “brother” for her face to be washed.  He lovingly obliges — until, of course, he is batted by her and she runs off.  I think she needs to learn some manners here.  🙂  Why can’t she simply walk away when she is done with the face washing – why must she strike out at Micah?  Seems like her boundaries could be loosened a little more…

Since Rachael came from a shelter that gave her moist cat food once a day and dry food throughout the day, I follow the same practice.  Micah has really hit his jackpot — oh boy!  Tasty food once Mama comes home from work at the end of the day!  He has a cute way of giving me direct eye contact, meowing and tossing his head to accent some of the meows.   He only talks to me this way, of course, when he’s hungry.  On weekends he will start to beg for his supper a few hours ahead of schedule.  His eagerness to devour his food has led me to feed Rachael on an extra chair.  That way he doesn’t push her away from her dish when he is done with his.  Smart mama, you say?  I think it’s more a case of cat mom indulgence!

Oh, and one more thing.  You know how people say “Now what?” when things keep happening to them?  Well, at the Stanton household, the new catch phrase is “Meowww what”.  (You might have to be there, I don’t know!)

Meoww for now!

The Little Things DO Matter

I advocate appreciating even the small things in one’s life.  Sometimes they can make you feel better than big, expensive things.  For those of you who have been following me a long time, please forgive this repeat:  I’ll never forget when I had cancer, and when I went to my regular grocery store, where you have to bag your own groceries, the lady and her son ahead of me in line bagged my groceries as soon as they heard the clerk ask me how I was getting along.  That small act of kindness and compassion became very big in my heart (and resides there still).

When my dad posed as Santa Claus and handed out candy to kids in that Michigan grocery store, he gave candy to even the senior citizens.  One lady cried because someone had taken two minutes to speak to her in a kind way, and then she didn’t have to feel forgotten.

Sunday morning I had my hot water and lemon juice before my walk, but nothing after that for several hours.  My getting sick to my stomach was a signal to my poor body that it needed hydration – and fast!  I would have felt much better if I had remembered to take care of myself – going to write instead of drinking a glass of water after my walk was just the reverse of what I needed.

And most of you know me by now:  I love to write poetry.    🙂  So, I will write a poem regarding what we have just been discussing.

THE LITTLE THINGS

Let your mouth take in food and drink

they will help you exist more fully.

Let your eyes see the beauty in the every day

and learn to ignore the slights against you

Let your feet move to assist those who need you

instead of being quiet and bored

Let your hands give gifts of love to those around you

or accept help if that is what is called for

Let your heart stay pure

never regarding anyone’s motives except your own

Let your brain be renewed daily

by choosing only the important things to think about

Use your whole body to help others

and yourself

Of this, life is made

My Morning Constitutional

My walk today was wonderful –

not because I got a lot of thinking and planning done

but because I felt like I was on a science class trip.

I saw and heard the great Canadian geese

come back for the season and trumpet

The lone male mallard

was just standing in the middle of the street, waiting

I even saw two loons (the bird type!)

hover over one of the small ponds around here

(Apparently they live down here in the Twin Cities now

Mourning Dove

instead of just up north around the lakes)

The rest of the birds

mourning dove (who didn’t mourn today)

chickadees

robins

and the rest of the regular variety

performed their own impromptu concert

They didn’t remember

that this neighborhood is known to be a quiet one

I guess I’d rather have bird songs break the quiet

and woodpeckers drilling on trees

than cars driving, music blaring

and people yakking

The ones from the amphibian world

the frogs that are always mating or dating

were still asleep – imagine that

And the weeping willow:

she was not weeping today

she is still trying to find the spring

As for my friends

I wish they were right here

but I will settle for them being in my heart

where I have a nice, comfy place for them

which I guard intensely

Dear friends,

As you greet the new day

remember I love  you

you’re never farther

than a thought away

When Your Heart Cries

free_153430

When your heart cries

do you listen?

Are you surprised at what it’s telling you?

Or do you disregard

this very important part of you?

Please, do not put regulations or rules on your heart.

Let it live free

and know that

for this time you are supposed to be here

created to be just the very way you are,

please do not think you’re unimportant,

because you do really mean so much to us.

I get sad when I think about

people who put themselves down,

they think their head should rule their heart

and they’re sometimes busy

putting up a facade-like wall.

They say I’m a good judge of people and character,

thank you very much,

and I already know

that I have not found anyone on WordPress

that I dislike.

You each make my day

in your own unique way

and I wouldn’t give you up for anything.

Neither will I throw your trust away.

I’m hoping and believing for the day

when the only thing we cry about is

the joy we see, feel and experience,

and the total awesomeness of

everything around us.

Meanwhile,

know that I love and appreciate you

and I’m happy to be walking along with you.

Love,

Debb
